THE EAGLES’ BIGGEST PROBLEM IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF JALEN HURTS

Through the first three games of the 2026 NFL regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line struggled to give Jalen Hurts consistent room to breathe. Hurts has already been sacked eight times within the first three games; this puts him on pace for roughly 45 sacks over a 17 game season, this is 30% above a typical QB season. In fact, this is more than twice as many sacks compared to this same time last year where he had only been sacked three times. Throughout his first two games this year Jalen has been faced with 17 drop backs, including 15 total QB hits and 8 hurries, with a 41.8% pressure rate.
This is astonishing compared to previous seasons where Jalen was only faced with a 36.1% pressure rate in 2024 and a 37.9% pressure rate last season in 2025. The 2024 eagles line not only kept Jalen Hurts safe but also fueled one of the NFL’s best offenses and allowed Saquon Barkley enough breathing room to rush for 2005 yards. Now fast forward back to present the eagles O-Line is forcing Jalen to make rough decisions, including throwing 3 interceptions in his first three games, consistently being forced out of the pocket and being put in hard positions to hit receivers down field.
All of these problems have started with our interior offensive line. Landon Dickerson, notably struggling this season, has been placed on injury reserve due to a knee injury that took place in week 1. This was a major injury as it forced Chris Kuper, the Eagles O-Line coach, to make significant role changes including shifting Cameron Jurgens to left guard and rookie Drew Kendall stepping up at the center position. These changes have heavily affected the offensive line communication, including Jordan Mailata known to be one of the most dependable tackles in the NFL. Simply put this O-Line is leaving Hurts vulnerable and forcing him out of the pocket.
How has this affected Jalen you might be asking? While in game it may look like it hasn't affected much as Jalen works great under pressure and can take a collapsing pocket and turn it into positive yards by running the ball. But if you look at it from an analytics standpoint and really dissect this offensive line you'll realize just how much Jalen has to scramble and is forced out of the pocket and has to make split second decisions. How can we succeed without our pass game this year?
The difference from the eagles 2024 super bowl winning offensive line is becoming incredibly visible. That unit included players such as Dickerson, Mailata, Jurgens, Mechi Becton, and Lane Johnson and consistently controlled the line of scrimmage allowing Saquon to run and Jalen to throw and was a key point in that team's success. Since then, injuries, personnel change, and inconsistent players have changed the team's reputation from having one of the strongest offensive line units in the NFL to having one that their own QB can't depend on.
The numbers don't lie, throughout 3 games a pressure rate of 25.3%, being sacked 8 times, forcing him to throw three interceptions and being consistently forced out of the pocket has greatly affected Jalen Hurts and this team. We have seen the eagles offensive line depth in the preseason in rookie Willie Lamkin and Markel Bell. When is Howie going to make the tough call and allow these rookies their shot.
