Lane Johnson has retired

It's official. Eagles fans knew this time was coming but didn't think it would come so soon. Johnson had some injury problems as of recent, and then missed this past game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. As of today Tuesday October 6th, 2026 Adam Schefter has posted that Lane Johnson is immediately retiring from the NFL.
For Eagles fans, this is a moment that is going to hurt. Lane Johnson has been much more than just another offensive lineman in Philadelphia. Since being selected fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, Johnson has been one of the most consistent and dominant players on the Eagles' offensive line. He has spent his entire 14-year career in Philadelphia, becoming a leader in the locker room and one of the most respected players in the organization.
Johnson's career is filled with accomplishments that will make him one of the greatest offensive linemen in Eagles history. He is a six-time Pro Bowler, a two-time first-team All-Pro and a two-time Super Bowl champion. He was also a major part of the Eagles' Super Bowl LII championship and their second Super Bowl victory.
But what made Johnson so special wasn't just the awards or the championships. It was his consistency. For more than a decade, Eagles fans could count on No. 65 protecting the right side of the offensive line. Through different quarterbacks, coaches and offensive schemes, Johnson remained one of the team's biggest constants.
Now, Philadelphia is being forced to face a future without him.
The timing makes this even more difficult. Johnson had already hinted earlier this year that retirement was becoming a real possibility. After missing time during training camp because of a personal matter, he explained that his children were getting older and that his aging parents were also becoming a bigger priority in his life. He made it clear that while he still loved football, his priorities away from the game were beginning to change.
Then came Sunday's loss to the Rams.
Johnson was unexpectedly ruled out shortly before kickoff, leaving the Eagles without one of the most important pieces of their offensive line. Philadelphia ultimately fell 24-20, and the offense struggled without its veteran right tackle.
Whether this truly marks the end of Johnson's career or simply accelerates a decision he had already been considering, one thing is undeniable: Eagles fans are watching the end of an era.
Lane Johnson came to Philadelphia as a 22-year-old first-round pick. More than a decade later, he leaves his mark as one of the greatest offensive linemen to ever wear an Eagles uniform.
And if this really is the end, there may not be a better way to describe his career than this:
Lane Johnson wasn't just protecting quarterbacks. He was protecting an era of Eagles football. Lane Johnson will go down as not only a Hall Of Famer, but will be known as one of the greatest players of all time to wear midnight green.
