The Philadelphia Flyers fell to the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1 on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.  This extends their season opening losing streak to nine games which is the worst in franchise history.  They opened the scoring with a Matevi Michkov goal in the first period, his third of the season which leads the team and only their third time they’ve scored in the first period this season. To start the game, they looked completely lifeless but started to wake up close to the end of the first period and continued that momentum throughout the second period. The momentum eventually ran out when Detroit scored to tie the game at one in the second period. After that goal, Detroit never looked back and kept the momentum in their favor for the rest of the game.  As bad as the Flyers are, there are two main positives to take away from this game. Joseph Woll was solid in net and the penalty kill was perfect.

The first positive was goaltender Joseph Woll.  Even though he was the losing goaltender, he had another solid start and stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced and came up clutch on many potential Detroit scoring chances.  When the guys in front of him couldn’t stop them, Woll was making plays.  If it wasn’t for Joseph Woll in net, things could have been much worse for the Flyers.

The second positive was the penalty kill. For the first time this season, they went a perfect 4 for 4. Our main penalty kill unit of Couturier, Dvorak, Sanheim, and Seeler got the job done.  Even though Detroit did have some scoring chances on their two power play opportunities, the penalty kill unit denied every opportunity.  The Flyers ended up closing the game out on the penalty kill and even though they knew they were gonna lose, they made sure that they finished the game the best they could.

Despite all these positive takeaways, the team and fans cannot ignore the fact that they are still winless. The Flyers hope to get things together and stop their skid from reaching double digits on Saturday when they face Ottawa for their second game in nine days at home which is scheduled to start at 7pm ET.
