After 28 years on the mic, the legendary voice of the 76ers really thought he was done after the team finished a disappointing series against the New York Knicks.

The Sixers brought Mike Gansey in to change the culture of the organization.

The rest is history....

"When I retired, I wanted to retire, I wanted to have more time for myself," Cord said. "Then [the Sixers] made a trade for Jaylen Brown on July 1 and my phone started blowing up a little, and then on July 24 LeBron James signed with the Sixers and my phone just blew up like crazy."

In the frenzy of people blowing up his phone? None other than Allen Iverson

I wake up and there’s a text from a number I don’t recognize. And it’s like, ‘Matt. Your book’s not complete. You got one more chapter. We need you, brother. AI.’ So I look up the area code and it’s Charlotte, and it’s where he lives. So I wait – this is six in the morning, I can’t text him back now. So I waited til like eleven, I texted that number back and I said, ‘Is this really Allen?’ He goes, ‘Yes. Who’d you think it was?’ And then we’re just texting back and forth.“

In a statement to NBC Sports Philly, Cord said

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return to the mic as PA announcer for 76ers for one more season. Serving in this role for the past 28 years has been a dream come true, and I have been fortunate to witness so many memorable moments from the best seat in the house. This is going to be a special year, and I can't wait to be back at Xfinity Mobile Arena with you all. Let's go, 76ers!"

The quest for a magical final season for Matt, starts now!
