Tied up at three in the 8th inning tonight the Phillies looked locked in for yet another stressful extra inning finish against the incredible Milwaukee Brewers,
After two quick outs the Phillies were alleviated of that stress. Luis Arraez in typical fashion got things started with a single. Then with 2 strikes Alec Bohm singled to left. Then, Bryson Stott came up clutch.
RBI double that scored Luis and Alec, brought Stott to 2nd after the throw in by center fielder Garrett Mitchell was off by a country mile, again with 2 strikes.
Brandon Marsh then wasted no time, taking advantage of another pitch up in the zone to drive in Stott.
“Huge team win for us. It started with Wheeler. It was a special night," said Marsh.
He was right about that.
Wheeler set a Phillies record when he struck out the first seven batters of the game, passing Brandon Duckworth’s set of six straight strikeouts to start a game on Aug. 5, 2002, VS the Dodgers. Wheeler’s first-inning punchout of Brice Turang was the 2,000th strikeout of his career.
Wheeler is the 96th pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 strikeouts. Wheeler’s teammate Aaron Nola reached the 2,000-strikeout mark earlier this year. They are the second pair of teammates to reach that milestone in the same season. Tim Hudson and Jake Peavy did it first with the 2014 Giants. It was a great start against the best team in baseball, a team the Phillies could face in the NL Division Series.
